Does anyone know anything about the Suikerbosrand reserve near Heidelberg? I've run a couple of marathons there and it's pretty hilly. I know they talk about 'hiking trails' but that could mean almost anything.
I would like try a few of the biggies in the Cape next year and, as awesome as our local trail races are, we need something with more meat. The thought of doing all of the distance on the road makes me want to cry real, manly, tears.
I'm specifically interested in getting some map reading practice. The last time I held a map and a compass I was in the army - way too long ago.
Doesn't seem fair does it? The Capies get to roll out of bed and they're in the perfect trail running environment; AND they get to quaff wine all day; AND they get to wear chinos. Hopefully things will gather momentum up here; there is certainly a need for it.
Thanks,
Bruce.

I was last at Suikerbosrand many years ago, but we did a 5 day hiking trail there back in the days when I was at varsity, and if I remember right, we did between 12 and 15km each day, so there must be around 60-70km of hiking trail in total - quite pretty from what I remember, and well established paths, but I honestly can't remember how tough they would be in terms of training routes, although as you say it is pretty hilly there.
I live out on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg in the Buffelspoort Valley, and I'm trying to get together a regular group run - the idea is to have it once a month, with the first one being on 18 December (see the event I've created on www.wildrunner.co.za). It is certainly an ideal area to prepare for the big runs in the Cape, so either join us on 18th, or mail me on ian@minus273.co.za
As far as map reading goes, you might like to try orienteering - you can get hold of the Rand Orienteering club on www.roc.org.za - otherwise I'm always happy to have some company on my long runs in the mountains on the weekends and provide a few tips.
Cheers
Ian
