Hi Ryan, we're excited you are so excited! Wishing you the best for lucky No 3! And it's completely natural to be nervous about your first night rail run! If you've not already, read our article here: http://www.trailseries.co.za/profiles/blogs/trail-series-running-at.... See you on the trails later and let us know how it goes for you! We'd love to hear your feedback! Claire

Only one more sleep (assuming we don’t have a siesta tomorrow huh?) I’m very excited!! I ride at Giba often, I consider it my "home ground" so I’m pleased to see some technical green with some fast orange trails! it’s my 3rd Trail run, lucky no 3 hopefully! buuuut its a night run, am I the only one nervous about hurling my body down some dark rocky terrain? What am I saying??!! it just makes it more exciting!!

Hey everyone,

Well I am just so damn excited to have a bash at my first night run !

 I so agree ... addictive !!

Welcome Ben!  I started last year and just love it ...  all you really need is a sense of humour :) trail runners are lovely people, always kind and friendly.

Hi Ben and Denise, so exciting to see such interaction between our members! :)

Given Denise's suggestions, as it is your first trail run and a night run at that, I do recommend the shorter distance just to see how you fare. A night is a little bit different to a usual trail run and since you are new to the sport, I'd suggest the shorter course. However, it's not going to be boring or not challenging - I promise ;)

Regarding shoes, head over to our sister website www.Wildrunner.co.za and check out this trail running shoe review page for some tips: http://wildrunner.ning.com/page/trail-shoes. Spend some time on the site checking out other posts on shoes. But as Denise says, rather use an old pair, see how you fare and spend some time choosing the right pair! If you stick around for prize-giving after the race, you might even win a pair of adidas trail runners as a spot prize!

Have a GREAT time on Wednesday night - let us know how it goes and we can't wait to welcome you to the trail running community!

Have fun,

Claire, Wildrunner

Howsit Ben

Firslty welcome to your new addiction. Secondly you will be fine hey, i think what will be more of a challenge is the fact that it is a night run. Your current fitness levels and capabilities are perfectly adequate, and for your first run its a good idea to stick to a shorter distance.

Dont rush out and buy new shoes, run in an old pair of shoes for this event and decide whether trail running is for you...which im sure it will be! Then use the event to network a bit and ask more experienced runners about shoe suggestions etc...i personally went through anout 6 pairs of shoes before finding a pair that suited me and my style of running, so dont make my mistake, it gets quite expensive!

Other than that just have a blast and enjoy the thrill of trail running, we are a small community (although growing very rapidly) so everyone is more than happy to help out where need be!

See you on the single track and good luck!

Hello TS,

This will be my first ever trail run, and I know this is probably not the right platform to ask these sorts of questions, but I am hoping someone could help.

I usually run between 10km and 15km a couple times a week and can manage 21.1km in 1:45 hours. Do you think I will manage the 10.5km run, and what time would you say the average runner could do this trail run in?

Should I purchase trail shoes or will an older pair of trainers be sufficient?

Thanks so much, and I really look forward to running in this event!

Cindi, what exciting feedback! We're so happy to hear that the trail running bug has bitten - trail running is a lot of fun! Pity about missing the night races (we understand - school nights are important) but we hope to see you (and the whole family) at the Virginia Trails Race 4 of the Series on the 27 Oct! :)
